Looking to downsize? Tracey Lazare of Lazare Design offers the following advice:

Give oversized furniture to family or sell on consignment. Space is more limited when moving to a condo, so the amount of stuff you can reduce or limit is beneficial.

Decluttering is a three-step process: • Have your children and grandchildren come to your house for a full day with a minivan and ask them to take away everything they are interested in, • Have a garage sale, hire someone to organize a contents sale, or buy a classified ad. • Donate items to charity. Some organizations will actually come to your house to take items away for free n Wall space is reduced in condos so you can’t take all your photos with you. Instead, select favourite wall-mounted family photos. Remaining photos can be displayed in a coffee-table scrapbook or in a photo album. Smaller photos of children and grandchildren can be professionally displayed as a collage.

If you are not buying new, re-upholster or slipcover existing sofas or dining chairs that need updating to current styles.

Save space by upgrading older television sets to flat screens.
