COMPLEX: ‘Easy walk’
“We often shopped in Okotoks, so it was an easy transition for us and the complex here is a nice, easy walk to everywhere.”
That resonates with Ann and Mel Hills, who were the first residents to move into the complex.
The retired couple moved into a suite in December 2006.
“This is the fullmeal deal,” says Mel. “We wanted a place where we could walk everywhere and here it is. It’s by Safeway, Tim Hortons, the seniors’ club. There’s even a funeral home right around the corner. It’s all here,” he says with a laugh.

The pathway system throughout Okotoks runs along the Sheep River banks just behind the complex. The hockey arena also has a walking track that residents can use in winter.
The couple has a resort property and a desire to travel.
“We’re never home,” says Ann. “It really suits our lifestyle.”
The lock-it-and-leave-it features of Calvanna Villages are a plus for the active adult lifestyle, says Paul Funk, who looks after the Calvanna Village developments for The Swan Group under president Richard Li.
“It’s one of the features of Calvanna Villages that appeals to that demographic,” says Funk. “We’ve had a lot of demand for our complexes that are oriented to the 50-plus lifestyle. People want an environment where they can have their kids and grandchildren visit, but they don’t want to live in a complex where there are kids living because of the noise and disruption.
“And they want a place that has all the amenities that appeal to that demographic ... all within walking distance.”
That’s where Calvanna excels.

The complexes have grown in reputation because of the amenities offered within the complex — and the location, which has been selected because it has amenities within walking distance.
Calvanna Village Okotoks is the ninth that has been built in and around Calgary and just five units are left in the project.
All are built and ready for possession.
Three of the units are two bedrooms, while two are onebedroom units ranging from 750 to 962 square feet.
Regular prices are from $199,900 to $259,900 with GST, but this weekend only, prices will be discounted an additional $10,000 per unit.
Homes come with features that include in-floor heating, along with an in-suite laundry with washer and dryer.
They also have a stove, fridge and dishwasher, maple cupboards in kitchens, and one underground parking stall.
For even more convenience, the show suite can be purchased with or without furniture.
“Okotoks is a big draw for this complex,” says Funk.
“It’s such a nice little town with that small-town feel, yet it’s just 15 minutes from Shawnessy and 20 minutes from SouthCentre Mall, where all the shops and services are located.
“It’s also close to the new hospital on the south side that’s now under construction.”
A big part of the draw is the social atmosphere that’s created due to living in a complex where everyone is about the same age, with many of the same lifestyle needs and wants. The Smiths endorse that. “This is such a good location,” says Jean.
“And we have an excellent social committee, so we have really good events here. We like the camaraderie so much that we have to plan our lives so we don’t miss an event.”
The complex has a clubhouse for members to use and “it is well used,” says Funk.
The Okotoks’ seniors’ centre adjacent to the complex is active as well, he says. “We enrol all of our residents there and pay for their first year of membership.”
