Alberta is closing in on its 2012 goal to provide 11,000 affordable housing units for those in need of shelter, says a provincial off icial.

During the past four years, 10,000 have been created, including more than 2,900 in Calgary, says Alberta Housing Minister Jonathan Denis.

The housing initiative was made possible through a combination of $26 million from the federal government’s Canada’s Economic Action Plan, $12 million under the two-year extension of the Canada-Alberta Affordable Housing Program Agreement, and $51 million through the province’s Housing Capital Initiatives
