PRINCE OF AN IDEA
A British project known worldwide as a trailblazing example of urban development helped inspire the Victoria Cross Terrace Homes in Currie Barracks.
Poundbury is an experimental community on the outskirts of Dorchester in England that aims to encourage things like walking or public transportation.
It is based on concepts outlined by Prince Charles’ book, A Vision for Britain, and was built on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, which is held by the prince.
Poundbury was inspired by his interest in creating urban areas that encourage a sense of community.
It is a mixed-use development that allows commercial buildings such as factories, shops and offices to be located in residential neighbourhoods.
To maintain the character in the appearance of the community, all changes to buildings in Poundbury need the Duchy of Cornwall’s consent. Visit duchyofcornwall.org/designand development_poundbury.htm
