‘MEADOWS’ SPROUTS CITY
Las Vegas means “the meadows” in Spanish. Founded in 1905 and incorporated March 16, 1911, the city currently covers 219.1 square kilometres.
Las Vegas, itself, has a population of about 600,000, with an additional 250,000 people living in the adjoining city of Henderson. More than 1.5 million total live in the metropolitan Vegas area.
There are more than 30 golf courses in the Las Vegas area, along with more than 1,700 gambling establishments and more than 500 churches.
The city’s McCarran International Airport is 1.6 kilometres from the strip and is ranked among the top 10 busiest airports in the world.
