When Jay Wilson and his partner Cheryl Noland first arrived at their new place in Palm Springs, Calif., they didn’t waste time — they pulled out their golf clubs.

The two made themselves at home on the scenic 27-hole course near Dunes Club called the Bermuda Dunes Country Club, which is where golf great Arnold Palmer won his last PGA Tour event.

“We arrived on the first of March, left on the 31st and played 24 rounds,” says Wilson. Needless to say, they’re fans. “For a golfer, it’s a no-brainer,” he says.

Dunes Club is a boutique property that offers fractional ownership in one- and twobedroom residences.

The property where Dunes Club now exists was once home to a small hotel, which was a magnet for legendary film and TV stars such as Clark Gable and Lucille Ball, as well as singer/actor and Rat Pack member Frank Sinatra.

Ownership at the Dunes Club includes a membership to the Bermuda Dunes Country Club. The historic course is the original home to the PGA’s Bob Hope Classic.

“It’s a very good golf course in very good condition,” says Wilson — and he should know. He is a former golf professional at a club in Calgary, while Noland is a retired school teacher.

When the two aren’t in Palm Springs, they tee off at Earl Grey Golf Club in Calgary, where they’re members.

They bought fractional ownership for the month of March for a one-bedroom, two bathroom residence at the resort. Prices at the property start at one-12th ownership from $24,900 US.

“When you go there, all you need to do is bring your clothes and your golf clubs,” says Wilson.

Outside of golf, there’s plenty to do, says Wilson. Residents often assemble at the pool, hot tub and fire pit.

“Quite a few people use (the fire pit) in the evening. They sit around have a drink and visit,” says Wilson.

“It seems that most people PROJECT: The Dunes Club consists of 20 single-storey units next to the historic Bermuda Dunes Country Club. LOCATION: Palm Springs, Calif. PRICE: 1/12 ownerships starts at $24,900 US. INFORMATION: Visit dunesclub palm are playing golf in the morning — and they’re at the pool in the afternoon and have the fire pit at night.”

Wilson says the area offers a number of excellent dining opportunities and cultural activities, including the nearby La Quinta Arts Festival.

Like Wilson and Noland, many Calgarians have turned to Dunes Club. No city in Canada or the U.S. has a higher number of residents at the development than Calgary.

Along with Calgarians, Wilson says he’s met owners from Edmonton as well as Saskatchewan and B.C. That’s no surprise, he says, considering “the weather is absolutely outstanding.”

Dunes Club project director Steve Roseman says the development’s fractional ownership provides an opportunity to people who want a sunny escape, but not full ownership in a condo that needs support year-round.

“It’s turnkey and hassle-free,” says Roseman.

There are now 20 residences at the property. Private investors are planning to build about eight more on land

they own next to the current residences later this year.

“This is a small property and we have a lot of owners who own multiple interests,” says Roseman. “We have owners that own up to five different interests that come for five months a year.”

Roseman says owners often get together for social activities. “There are always owner functions here. They’re people with similar interests in a similar age group,” he says.

The residences come in one and two bedroom layouts ranging from 900 to 1,100 square feet. The units have standard features, including granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances.

Prior to arriving at their residence, owners can preorder food from local markets.

“When it’s delivered, the staff prepares the fridge so they don’t have to go shopping after a long trip,” says Roseman. “When they leave, we give them containers for spices and toiletries, which we store for them until their next trip — so it’s really a second home down here.”

The development includes a concierge service, which offers dinner reservations and tee time bookings.
