STEEL: ‘Peace’

Calgary Herald - Calgary Herald New Condos - - Recreation & Investment Properties -

Grande Rockies Resort is a four-storey building made from concrete and steel.

“It is the only concrete-andsteel building in Canmore for a condo hotel,” says Blaeser, adding that means “soundproofing between floors — and it’s just having that piece of mind that it’s solidly constructed.”

After opening for occupancy in 2010, there are now six standard-sized suites remaining, which include one- and twobedroom floor plans and seven penthouses.

These units are dressed to the nines in top-end specifications. The standard suites even come fully furnished.

“You’re buying like a turnkey suite,” says Blaeser. “It’s furnished right down to the icecream scoop.”

The penthouses are a step above, she says.

“The penthouses are pretty special in that they are designed for a very specific buyer,” says Blaeser. “We have some penthouses that are finished on the interior, but for the most part, we have left them unfinished, so the person who comes in to purchase them will have the opportunity to work with our design team to customize them to their needs.”

The suites come with features such as gourmet kitchens, programmable steam showers, iPod docking stations and pullout couches, along with spacious dining and living areas and “incredible mountain vistas,” says Blaeser.

They also have generoussized balconies with gas hookups for barbecuing with a view.

“It’s huge,” says Blaeser of the balconies. “Canmore is all about the outdoors and there is nothing better than being able take it all in, walking just steps out of your unit.”

The multi-level penthouses, which range from 1,300 to almost 2,500 square feet, have 20-foot-tall ceilings and most include private hot tubs on the balconies.

Standard suites start at $155,000, while penthouses start at $365,000.

That price becomes even more affordable through the resort’s rental program, which allows residents to make money on their suites when they aren’t using them.

“There’s a phenomenal rental program and it’s actually one of the highest netting rental programs to owners in the town of Canmore,” says Blaeser.

Ali Shivji bought a one-bedroom unit on the ground floor at the resort and makes use of the rental program.

He and his family enjoy skiing and wanted a regular place to stay while enjoying the outdoors in Canmore. But when they’re not there, the investment doesn’t go to waste.

“It’s a place that we can call home, but know that when we aren’t there, it can still generate revenue and therefor cover most, if not all, of the basic costs,” says Shivji.

While he owns the suite with his wife, it’s also used by relatives.

“It’s really more of a family investment than anything else,” he says.

Outside the walls of the homes, there’s plenty to enjoy at the resort, including Habitat Restaurant and Bar.

“It’s just like you’re actually stepping into an uber-chic bistro in Toronto,” says Blaeser.

“It’s a real departure from the typical mountain casual style dining that you see in Canmore. We actually offer room service to all our owners and guests seven days a week.”

There’s also an indoor swimming pool and hot tub with a kids’ pool and waterslide. Other amenities include a state-ofthe-art fitness centre, heated underground parking, a modern business centre and three well-appointed meeting rooms.

Shivji says he makes good use of the resort amenities.

“I love the hot tubs,” he says. “There’s an indoor-outdoor hot tub, so you can go from the outdoor to the indoor when it’s cold, which is pretty cool.”

Off the resort, Canmore boasts four seasons of outdoor fun, with skiing and golf courses just a short drive away.

Golfers can turn to Silvertip Resort Golf Course or Stewart Creek Golf and Country Club in Canmore, while skiers only have to drive no more than an hour to enjoy Norquay, Lake Louise and Sunshine Village.

“Canmore is such a unique recreational spot,” says Blaeser.

“It’s the No. 1 escape spot for anyone who wants to get out of the city and just feel content and peaceful in the mountains.”
