Canola plant to see $15M expansion


CANOLA • A Lethbridge canola plant is being expanded and given a new research lab to enhance its delivery systems and deal with demand created by anti-trans fat legislatio­n.

Winnipeg-based Richardson Internatio­nal Ltd. announced Wednesday it will invest $15 million to expand its canola packaging plant in Lethbridge by 40 per cent, adding 33,000 square feet to warehouse space and bulk oil storage.

It will also open a $1.5-million lab and pilot plant at the Lethbridge facility to continue to develop new canola-based oil, non-hydrogenat­ed margarine and shortening products for the food processing, bakery, food service and retail markets.

Richardson is Canada’s largest privately owned agribusine­ss.
