Death on Everest

FILM • Enjoy a free movie and popcorn and learn about the effects of highaltitude exposure.

Alberta Innovates — Health Solutions hosts Into Thin Air: Death on Everest tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre (1133 Kensington Rd. N.W.)

Based on Jon Krakauer’s bestseller, the movie recreates the infamous 1996 expedition to Mount Everest that claimed five lives. The film chronicles the climbers’ journey and the invisible, intensifying effects of altitude and stress.

University of Calgary professor Jeff Dunn will introduce the film, then lead a discussion on the latest research into high-altitude exposure and the effects of low oxygen on the brain. “High altitude exposure causes hypoxia, or reduced oxygen delivery, which can have severe effects on our body’s cells. Hypoxia has implications beyond mountain climbing,” says Dunn. His research uses optical imaging technology and MRI to study problems related to hypoxia, which include stroke, cancer, epilepsy and high-altitude exposure.
