boos sweet sounds for Steckel

-

David Steckel of the New Jersey Devils was happy to hear irate Pittsburgh Penguins fans booing him Tuesday night.

That’s because they were acknowledging his first goal in 15 games, despite the Penguins’ 4-2 victory.

“It would’ve been nicer in a win, but it’s good to come in here and contribute on the score sheet,’’ Steckel told NJ.com. “It’s just nice to look at something and see yourself contribute other than little things.’’

Steckel earned the Penguin fans’ venom with his blindside hit to the head of superstar captain Sidney Crosby during the 2011 Winter Classic. Crosby, who was hit by Tampa Bay Lightning’s Victor Hedman several days later, has missed 39 games with a concussion and his return date is uncertain.

“They have great fans, so I don’t expect anything less,’’ Steckel said of the Pittsburgh fans.
