Boy, 17, shot dead by 10-year-old with a shotgun in B.C. accident


CRANBROOK • A 17-year-old boy was shot dead last week when a loaded shotgun discharged in the hands of a 10-year-old.

The shooting took place Thursday in Cranbrook, B.C., about 390 kilometres southwest of Calgary.

RCMP have identified the 17-year-old as Michael Justin Voth. Authoritie­s said the shooting was an accident. They said there are no provisions for a child under 12 to face criminal charges, nor can the child’s identity be released.

Police are still investigat­ing why the firearm was unsecured, and said the owner may face charges.

The relationsh­ip, if any, between the 10-year-old boy and the victim was not revealed.
