We are not amused
We are not amused — at the federal Liberal Party’s resolution to sever ties with the British monarchy.
Delegates at the party’s upcoming convention will be asked to “urge the Parliament of Canada to form an all-party committee to study the implementation of instituting a Canadian head of state popularly elected and sever formal ties with the British Crown.”
Canada may be a multicultural nation but strong national identity requires a clear sense of one’s history. Our historical roots to the monarchy go back even further than the French and British Crowns, to the quasi-monarchical forms of government first created by aboriginals.
Canada is part of the Commonwealth, which the Queen referred to in her Christmas message as “a family of 53 nations, all with a common bond, shared beliefs, mutual values and goals.”
We take that family seriously. While royal visits to this side of the pond can prove costly, most Canadians support maintaining our traditional ties with the Crown. According to the latest Angus Reid poll, only 33 per cent wanted to sever all ties with the British monarchy, while 58 per cent were opposed.
The monarchy helps us retain a distinct identity, apart from the Americans.
Long live Canada’s Queen and future kings and queens.
