Gomez taking a breather from her music career

- LEAH COLLINS

She’s a showbiz vet who’s toured the world, released three albums, and has seen her hits go platinum —and, at the age of 19, Selena Gomez is stepping away from music.

Let’s not call it retirement, exactly. She’s still a teenager, after all, and besides, while speaking to E! News about her future plans, Gomez diplomatically kept the topic rather open-ended. Still, don’t expect her to finally launch that rap career in 2012.

“We’re going to take a break from music,” Gomez said about her plans for the new year. “My band and I are going to chill on that for a second,” said the pop star, whose ongoing tour wraps its final leg, a trek through South America, Feb. 11, in Uruguay.

No more music for Gomez this year — and no more Wizards of Waverly Place, either, since the Disney Channel kid-comedy that made her famous aired its series finale on Friday. What’s a teen queen to do? There’s more to life than making kissy-faces with Justin Bieber, and while some Beliebers may disagree, Gomez is taking that fact to her bedazzled little heart. She’s not singing this year, but she will be acting — and not in anything you’d find on the Disney Channel.

In the coming months, Gomez will begin work on a new movie from Kids screenwriter Harmony Korine. It’s called Spring Breakers, and MTV News reports that James Franco and another former Disney star, Vanessa Hudgens, are attached. The story is rumoured to be about college girls who turn to crime to fund their spring break, only to land in jail.

She’ll be juggling another movie role, as well — though whether it’s more or less in the vein of Monte Carlo remains to be seen. MTV notes Gomez is possibly attached to a second movie project, something called Hot Mess from music video director Dave Meyers (Justin Bieber’s Somebody To Love, Katy Perry’s Firework).

In the E! interview, Gomez mentioned that she’ll be “doing two films in the beginning” of 2012, so those two titles could match up. Either way, she said she’s “excited” about this non-musical new phase of her career. “They are both different, and things I’ve never played before and will be fun for me.”
