A Calgary woman badly beaten at a Mexican resort is facing a long recovery after having extensive reconstructive surgery, her husband says.

“Although she is still sedated, she has been very responsive and we are happy to see small improvements every day,” Sheila Nabb’s husband, Andrew, said in a statement Thursday.

ACalgary woman badly beaten at a Mexican resort has successfully undergone extensive reconstructive surgery and is now beginning her long recovery, her husband said.

Sheila Nabb has endured a difficult time since she was found bloodied and unconscious in a Mazatlan hotel elevator, and her family remains at her side to provide care and support, said Andrew Nabb, speaking out for the first time since his wife was attacked two weeks ago.

“Although she is still sedated, she has been very responsive and we are happy to see small improvements every day,” Andrew Nabb said in a statement made public by Alberta Health Services on Thursday.

“Sheila’s injuries were very serious and she has a long recovery ahead, but we are looking forward to having her back home where she belongs.

“I would like to thank Canadians from coast-to-coast for their concern and support, and ask that you continue to keep Sheila and our family in your prayers and continue sending us positive energy.”

Nabb, a 37-year-old office manager, was found Jan. 20 unconscious in the elevator of the Hotel Riu Emerald Bay resort in Mazatlan, her face brutally beaten. Last Friday, she was flown home via air ambulance to undergo surgery at a Calgary hospital.

S he has s pent several days in the intensive-care unit and remains in the hospital.

A Mexican man has been charged with attempted murder in the case and will undergo a trial.

Jose Ramon Acosta Quintero, also known as El Ray, initially confessed to police that he was high on cocaine and drunk when he attacked Nabb. He later told a court he made the confession only after he was tortured.

Andrew Nabb’s statement did not comment on the arrest or circumstances around the attack on his wife.

In Mazatlan, the municipal public security minister said on Thursday that the Hotel Riu suffered a security failure that appeared to have allowed the accused illegal entrance.

Victor Zatarain Cedano said there was a safety system failure at the resort, but said he couldn’t comment further at this time.

It is up to the hotel owners to come up with their own security plans and ensure the safety of guests through advanced technology systems, he said.
