Target announces Spring 2013 store openings

Zellers stores in Calgary will start closing by summer as Target Corp. begins remodelling sites for announced 2013 openings.
Target said Thursday that three city locations — the Forest Lawn Shopping Centre, Market mall and chinook centre — will open in spring 2013. The company, which plans to open 125 to 135 stores in Canada, previously announced a Signal Hill store would open in summer 2013.
Calgary stores are also planned at the Shoppes at Shawnessy and Sunridge Mall, although no opening dates have been announced.
Each store will require a sixto nine-month renovation, said Lisa Gibson, a Target Canada spokesperson.
About $10 million to $11 million will be spent remaking each location, she said.
The Zellers stores at Market Mall and Chinook will close Aug. 11, while those at Forest Lawn and Signal Hill will shut Oct. 13.
The Zellers store at Deer Valley Shopping Centre will close June 2. That location was acquired by Walmart.
Tiffany Bourre, external communications manager for the Hudson’s Bay Co., which operates Zellers, said a liquidation sale will begin about 12 weeks prior to a store closing.
“Shawnessy and Sunridge were both acquired by Target, but we have not received closure notice for the locations,” she said.
Bourre said Zellers will provide career transition and support services to staff.
Each Target store is to employ 150 to 200, with hiring to begin this year, Gibson said.
“The agreement with Zellers is purely a financial one and so we obviously don’t obtain the rights to employees, technology or anything else besides the sites,” she said. “In some cases, the number of employees we’re going to need per store is actually double what the current number of employees is at a Zellers.”
Minneapolis-based Target Corporation has 1,763 stores across the United States. It is also building a distribution centre in Balzac.
