Suspect arrested in 2010 bartender slaying
Police have made an arrest in the mysterious shooting death of a bartender, killed in the middle of the night as he was closing his workplace.
Dexter Stanley Stephen Bain, a 36-year-old father, was shot multiple times as he was closing Our Place Pub & Grill, at 3709 26th Ave. N.E., in November 2010.
Police were saying little about the arrest on Monday.
“I don’t know which members made the arrest, but I can confirm the person is in the hands of homicide investigators in relation to that particular homicide investigation,” said police duty inspector Darren Cave, adding that the person’s name won’t be released until charges are laid.
Bain’s family was overcome with emotion by the development when reached by phone.
“I am s o glad for my niece and for his mom and I hope this means that person can’t hurt anyone else,” said Jennifer Farrell, Bain’s stepsister who lives in Ontario.
“We really miss him,” she said, adding the homicide has been hard on Bain’s daughter, who is now 16 years old.
Police have said they were “puzzled” over the shooting, which happened after three men burst through a back door and opened fire, shooting Bain at close range.
“This is a difficult case,” police said at the time.
As two friends and a regular patron sat up front in the bar, they heard a sudden “frantic discussion” and multiple shots in the backroom, police said.
Bain stumbled to the front door, where he collapsed outside.
He was rushed to hospital but died from gunshot wounds.
At the time, police said there was nothing stolen from the bar, no sign of forced entry and nothing to indicate Bain knew his killers.
Police wouldn’t comment Monday if further arrests are expected, but say the homicide unit is expected to release more information today.
