ROBERTS, Arthur Bruce (Art)

He was predecease­d by his faithful wife Olga Roberts, devoted daughter Gail Gladys Roberts, and by his son Richard Bruce Roberts. Art was born and raised in Winnipeg and was very active in the YMCA during his teens as a gym leader, in the Y-tankers and the HI-Y. He attended Robert H. Smith and Kelvin schools before enlisting with the RCAF, 1943-1945. Art attended the University of Manitoba, 1945-1950, and attained a BSC in Mechanical Engineerin­g. Moved to Calgary after the Winnipeg flood of 1950 and began a thirty-five-year career in the oil patch. He worked in all phases of the industry - cementing, acidizing and perforatin­g oil wells, selling commercial lubricants, roughnecki­ng on service and drilling rigs, battery operating, loading tank cars, supervisin­g drilling and completion operations. Art supervised the bringing in of the first commercial production in the Pembina Field on the Socony Vacuum discovery well in 1953. The well represente­d the first instance of sand fracking to be successful­ly implemente­d in Canada. Formed Roberts Engineerin­g Ltd. in 1962 and provided consulting and supervisio­n of the drilling and completion of oil and gas wells from Ontario to B.C. and the U.S.A. to the N.W.T. Retiring in 1986, Art enjoyed his garage workshop where he designed new ideas including one patent. He also enjoyed golf and curling, playing in many golf tournament­s and bonspiels. Art and Ollie enjoyed travelling, taking three European tours plus several cruises including a World Cruise in 1997. They holidayed in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico at their condo during the winter. Held lifetime membership­s with the BPOE and APEGGA. A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen's Park Cemetery) on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 3:00 p.m., with viewing from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Queen's Park Cemetery.
