Canuck pedals to silver medal


cycling • Zach Bell of Watson Lake, Yukon, won Canada’s third medal at the UCI world track championsh­ips in Melbourne, Australia, Friday, a silver in the six-discipline omnium.

Bell, who secured an Summer Olympics berth in the men’s omnium, was second to Glenn O’shea of Australia. The podium finishes came down to the one-kilometre time trial. Bell posted the eighth-fastest time, 1:04.216, but O’shea was faster at 1:03.042 and won the gold.

After the first day of the women’s omnium Friday, twotime defending champ Tara Whitten of Edmonton was in a third-place tie with Sarah Hammer of the U.S.
