Canuck finishes just off podium

Edmonton’s Tara Whitten pedalled to fourth place in the women’s omnium at the 2012 UCI track world championsh­ips in Melbourne, Australia, on Saturday.

Whitten finished three points shy of the bronze medal, with 39 points earned in the six-discipline event. She was sixth overall after Friday’s events.

On Saturday, the two-time world omnium champion, who has already qualified for the London Summer Olympics, finished 11th in the mass-start individual pursuit and sixth in the time trial. Britain’s Laura Trott clinched the gold with 28 points.

Calgary’s Monique Sullivan was 13th overall in the women’s keirin.
