Canuck finishes just off podium

Edmonton’s Tara Whitten pedalled to fourth place in the women’s omnium at the 2012 UCI track world championships in Melbourne, Australia, on Saturday.

Whitten finished three points shy of the bronze medal, with 39 points earned in the six-discipline event. She was sixth overall after Friday’s events.

On Saturday, the two-time world omnium champion, who has already qualified for the London Summer Olympics, finished 11th in the mass-start individual pursuit and sixth in the time trial. Britain’s Laura Trott clinched the gold with 28 points.

Calgary’s Monique Sullivan was 13th overall in the women’s keirin.
