Seniors let down

-

Re: “Fix for health care,” Letter, April 15.

Ralph Coombs is quite correct; this government has failed to provide adequate facilities for longterm care. My mother was in a for-profit nursing home for one week. The quality of care and her room were abysmal.

The room was originally a one-bedroom that had been divided by a flimsy curtain to become a two-bedroom. My mother had the entrance side — no light, no window and a shared bathroom. It was dark, musty and unclean. This is where she was to spend the rest of her life.

We were fortunately able to move her into a not-forprofit facility. She has her own room with a window and private bathroom. My mother is now treated with respect, dignity and compassion.

Our seniors deserve quality facilities and compassionate care. We should not be making profits off senior care by reducing staff and only meeting minimal standards. Where is the Alberta Advantage?
