Men no longer afraid of colour
The once-reluctant male shopper is becoming more style savvy, distancing his relationship a bit with the classics and becoming acquainted with new spring trends.
Many men want to be better dressed, and it’s being culturally accepted. Now retailers are catering to this idea and releasing new styles for the trend-savvy male.
“He’s much more confident than the traditional baby-boom man, much more of a risk-taker,” says Nancy Dennis, director of trends for menswear at Sears. “We’re going for classic, Americana story, but instead of being neo-nautical there’s a hit of green. We call it suburban chic, classic and fresh, retro style. We describe it as a guy in the backyard in the ’50s, barbecuing. It has a Don Draper (Mad Men) look to it.”
This spring, men are stepping out of their comfort zones and adding bold colours to freshen up their looks.
“More than ever, men are embracing the coloured trend — coloured polos, or denim like azure blue jeans,” says Sarah Smithers, the fashion spokeswoman for Winners.
“Chinos and khakis are always a fashion statement, but pairing it with something colourful makes a big impact.”
The classics like polos and khakis will always be around with men’s fashion, but it’s about how men put their outfits together with the little differences in style.
Other staple items this season are cotton-cashmere spring sweaters. Dennis suggests wearing them in spring colours like reds, blues, Kelly green and other bold hues.
