Calgary’s Csikos shines for Canada

Emily Csikos of Calgary scored with four seconds remaining in the game as Canada tied the reigning Olympic women’s champion Netherland­s 11-11 Monday at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Trieste, Italy.

It was the third goal of the game for Csikos. Canada’s other scorers were Joelle Bekhazi and Marina Radu, both of Pointe-claire, Que., and Krystina Alogbo of Rivieredes-prairies, Que., with two apiece. Sisters Carmen and Monika Eggens of Maple Ridge, B.C., added one each. Rachel Riddell of Victoria was in goal for Canada.

Mieke Cabout gave the Dutch an 11-10 lead with 32 seconds to go before Csikos’ heroics.

In Group B, Greece, the world champion, is first at 2-0-0, followed by Canada and the Netherland­s at 1-0-1 and Brazil at 0-0-2.

Canada faces Greece today.
