Fawcett tops Calgary-klein, touts Tory ‘vision’

Earlier in the day, incumbent Kyle Fawcett, a Progressive Conservative, said he felt confident with his campaign as voters headed to the polls on Monday in Calgary-klein.

And early results Monday night indicated Fawcett was cruising to victory again.

“I think we offered a pragmatic vision for Albertans moving forward — a long-term vision for this province to secure our prosperity and future quality of life,” said Fawcett.

“And clearly Albertans are confident in the leadership that Premier (Alison) Redford has provided this province over the last six months and they’re willing to put their trust in her over the next four years.

“Obviously there were a lot of vigorous debates on lots of issues. But I think our campaign offered very much a forward-looking vision for our province — one that really puts our province in the context of what’s happening around the world and in our own country.”

Jeremy Nixon, of the Wildrose Party, was baffled by the result.

“I’m disappointed right now. I’m very surprised. Very surprised actually,” said the 30-year-old.

“I don’t know. We worked hard. We made some good connections in the neighbourhoods. I don’t know what else to say. Very puzzled.”

Calgary-klein is a new riding created in the 2010 boundary redistribution. The inner-city riding, previously Calgary-north Hill, elected Conservatives since 1971.

Other candidates in this riding were Roger Gagne, Evergreen Party, Marc Power, NDP and Christoper Tahn, Liberal.
