Kennedy-glans trumps Wildrose in Varsity

When Liberal Harry Chase decided not to run for re-election in Calgary-varsity, it opened the door for someone new to take over the riding.

And results Monday night indicated Progressive Conservative candidate Donna Kennedy-glans was well on her way to filling that position.

Kennedy-glans, 52, said the primary concern of voters in Calgary-Varsity was education.

“In the constituency, we just reju- venated people’s interest. We had a dynamite volunteer team that came together. We did the ground game,” she said, adding voters wanted to preserve the level of education that they have.

While Chase did not run in this election, he remained a force in the riding during the election campaign, helping Bruce Payne’s Liberal campaign.

But that obviously wasn’t enough to stop the Tory machine.

“I’m disappointed,” said Payne, 51. “I think that a lot of Progressives were motivated by fear. But at the end of the day I think we ran a good campaign. The results didn’t appear to be what I heard on the doorsteps. Regardless, it is what it is."

Earlier in the day Rob Solinger, 55, the Wildrose Party candidate, said he felt his campaign team gathered momentum during the campaign.

He said the main concern in the riding was “a government that’s out of touch.”

Other candidates in the riding are Alex Mcbrien, Alberta Party, Jackie Seidel, NDP, and Carl Svoboda, Evergreen Party.
