A one-stop shop for mind, body, spirit

- DAVI D PARKER

Two Calgary companies passionate about health and wellness have joined forces to create Inliv, a company that offers medical, fitness, rehabilitation and wellness delivered by an integrated team at one location. Innovative Health Group and Foothills Health Consultants are today working together under the new company out of a space on the second floor of Arriva tower.

For Vince Danielsen, health and fitness have been a priority and focus since he was told at age 15 that he had non-hodgkin’s lymphoma. He fought it, beat it, went on to graduate in kinesiology at the University of British Columbia, and played eight seasons in the CFL. In the 1998 Grey Cup, the Stampeder was named Canadian MVP, but realizing that he couldn’t play football forever, that same year he launched a personal training studio and expanded it in 2006 by adding rehabilitation and wellness called Innovative Health Group.

Danielsen is the managing director of Inliv.

Foothills Health Consultants was founded in 1978, specializing in medical assessment of employee health. One of its founders, Kelly Blackshaw, a kinesiologist and certified exercise physiologist and co-founder of Kidsport, is business development director of Inliv, and colleague Tanis Blench is Inliv’s medical director.

Blench obtained her medical degree from the University of Alberta and practised in Lloydminster for four years before moving to Calgary in 1982. Since then she earned an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business and is a certificate in anti-aging medicine. Blench was awarded a scholarship to attend the University of Arizona fellowship in integrated medicine, focusing on the whole person — mind, body and spirit.

The new organization, a division of Coril Holdings, purchased its 16,000 square feet in Arriva and has created a seamless experience from providing executive medical assessment for its more than 160 corporate clients through to personal fitness programs.

With the help of Ce De Ce interior designer Connie Young, Inliv opens its doors to three welcoming, classy reception desks from where staff directs clients to one of three other waiting areas for either medical, wellness or fitness needs.

The “Doctor, the patient will see you now” team includes physicians and full laboratory and diagnostic suites from where results can be forwarded through its electronic loop to other Inliv areas if further consultation is deemed necessary for specialty services such as massage therapy, nutrition or exercise.

A huge benefit is the opportunity for busy people to obtain all of these services on one floor instead of having to make appointments to see specialists all over town. Inliv even provides “no waiting” travel shots.

The range of wellness and rehabilitation services includes many types of therapy, nutrition/life/health coaching and functional and kinetic treatment.

There are no drop-ins in the fitness area. Appointment-only services are offered by 18 skilled personal trainers in the fitness studio who provide a customized program for each client.

Danielsen says Inliv is a trendsetter: “Offering the most comprehensive and fully integrated health-care model, we have redefined collaboration between eastern and western medicine working harmoniously side-by-side.”

And it can also be fun, as clients have worked hard with trainers to be fit enough to enjoy expeditions such as biking tours of Scotland, Napa Valley and Kananaskis country — all organized through Inliv staff.

Forty years in the saddle at the same restaurant/bar location is cause for much celebration and a testament to the vision and management skills of Harris Dvorkin of the Ranchmans Cookhouse & Dancehall.

This weekend, he is celebrating with anniversary events while showing off a new bar, new state-ofthe-art sound system, light show and jumbo-tron along with 35 flat-screen TVS that can be controlled using iphones.

And for dancers, Ranchmans, which has a capacity of more than 1,000, has one of the finest sprung wood floors in these here parts.

Congratulations to one of Calgary’s great hospitality destinations.
