Mets hit with more injuries

-

Twin waves crashed the New York Mets’ clubhouse Tuesday, each one carrying away one of the team’s biggest names.

The first beached jason bay, sending him to the disabled list with a fractured rib. The second marooned Mike Pelfrey, landing him a seat next to Bay with a swelled right elbow.

Learning whether these waves turn to ripples or adopt the word “tidal” will require more time. But 17 games into the season, this paper-thin Mets roster is now missing two-thirds of its opening day outfield and one of its most durable pitchers.

Pelfrey’s injury seems like cause for greater alarm. He said he first felt tightness during Saturday’s start and suspected tendinitis.

Bay injured his ribs while diving for a ball in left field during the second game of Monday afternoon’s doubleheader. He suffered what the Mets were calling “a non-displaced fracture of a rib on the left side.”

Both players were put on the 15-day disabled list.

Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds put left-handed setup man Bill Bray on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained groin that has bothered him since spring training, another blow to their depleted bullpen.

Bray gave up four hits and three runs during an 11-1 loss to St. Louis on April 18. The move to the DL is retroactive to April 19.

The Reds already were missing closer ryan madson, out for the season with a torn elbow ligament.
