Public can vote on high school’s name

-

The Calgary Board of Education is asking for public input in deciding the name of its new high school.

Scheduled to open in the fall, the name of the northwest school has been pared down to four options: Peter Lougheed, Robert Thirsk, Eric Harvie and Brian Keating.

“We want everyone to have a say on the name of the school,” said Joy Bowen-Eyre, board trustee for the district.

Lougheed was the premier of Alberta for 14 years from 1971 to 1985. The Calgarian was recently named Canada’s top premier.

Thirsk was an astronaut who became the first Canadian to fly a long-duration expedition aboard the International Space Station. The Lord Beaverbrook High School and University of Calgary graduate is still involved with the CBE through the Canadian Space Agency.

Harvie was a Calgary-based philanthropist who died in 1975. He was instrumental in the creation of Heritage Park, and assisted with the Glenbow Foundation, Calgary Zoo and Banff Centre.

Keating is a naturalist of goingwild. org and the head of conservation outreach at the Calgary Zoo. He has led more than 60 expeditions to the best wildlife areas on the planet and was voted by the students of the CBE as one of the “Top 10 Contemporary Calgarians.”

People can vote until Monday at cbenwhs.com.
