Goat’s beard a local favourite
Goat’s Beard Aruncus dioicus Named the Calgary Horticultural Society’s 2011 Perennial Plant of the Year, goat’s beard is a native of mountainous areas, making it a hardy choice for Calgary gardeners. A standout in a shady woodland style garden, or near a pond or running water, goat’s beard will provide a profusion of showy creamy-white flowers in mid- to late summer. The foliage is lacy and dark green on arching stems, making it a strong focal point, even without flowers. The attractive seed heads can be left on the plant through to late fall for more interest.
Provide plenty of space for this long-lived perennial, as it will reach 120 to 180 cm in height and 90 to 150 cm in width.
Conditions: partial to full shade, fertile soil rich in organic matter
Propagation: divide using a sharp knife or spade, allow female plants to selfseed and move seedlings
Cultivars to try: A. dioicus “Kneiffii,” a smaller plant with fine foliage, arching stems and distinctive plumes, or its relative, dwarf Korean goat’s beard (Aruncus aethusifolius)
Additional comments: new plants require plenty of water, but will become somewhat drought tolerant once established. Avoid placing plants in direct sunlight for best results. WANT TO KNOW MORE?
