Swerve earns three more magazine awards
Prizes given for writing, photo and illustration
After receiving four honourable mentions at the National Magazine Awards gala on June 7 in Toronto, Swerve walked away with three Western Magazine Awards on Friday night.
Bruce Weir, Swerve’s executive editor, won a writing award for his humorous piece The Wedding Guest Manifesto in the Service category. Freelance photographer Marc Rimmer landed a Best Photograph-architectural, Landscape or Still Life for his shot of the Bamboo Tiki Room. And Calgary-based illustrator Byron Eggenschwiler’s whimsical illustrations that accompanied the cover story The Mouse &I:A Love Story earned him an WMA for Best Illustration or Illustration Feature.
Swerve was nominated for a total of 10 WMAS at the 30th annual Western Magazine gala reception and awards ceremony, held in Vancouver. The weekly magazine, published by the Calgary Herald, has garnered more than 60 national, international and regional awards for writing, photography, design and illustration since its inception in 2004.
“Swerve continues to be a must- read product for Calgarians. It provides a great resource for people who want to know what’s happening in our city, and it provides a mix of engaging articles for all to enjoy,” said Herald managing editor Monica Zurowski.
The Western Magazine Awards Foundation honours and celebrates editorial excellence in Western Canadian magazine writing, photography, illustration and art direction.
The awards recognized work published in 2011.
“It’s wonderful to be recognized by one’s peers,” said Valerie Berenyi, Swerve’s editor-in-chief. “Kudos should go to the Swerve staff: executive editor Bruce Weir, art director Vishu Mahajan, living editor Meghan Jessiman, the Going Out section co-ordinator Jon Roe and contributing editor Jacquie Moore.
“I also take my hat off to Swerve founding editor Shelley Youngblut and art director Danae Thompson, both of whom are responsible for much of the work that was honoured on Friday night.”
