Quiet time
Re: “Seeking ideas for new library,” June 15.
It’s encouraging to see that the civic government is interested in public input concerning the morphology of the new Central Library. Unfortunately, Ald. Druh Farrell says the idea of a quiet and orderly library isn’t the library in Calgary’s future. A surreal notion indeed.
As a telecommunications engineer with three university degrees, I can say that for myself and millions of graduates from higher education throughout history, the library has always been an oasis of peace that creates an atmosphere where one can concentrate on studying instead of being disturbed by inane chit chat or a neighbour’s earphones blaring at 100 decibels.
I suggest accommodations could be made for people who wish to study, or just read for pleasure, as well as for those who want to converse, be tutored or otherwise be engaged in talk that wouldn’t disrupt other people focusing.
The absurd idea shows Farrell has little interest in her constituents’ wishes and has already made up her mind. Could we have a representative on the library’s board who didn’t just bungee in when it was apparent the Castell library was falling apart, and who will actually factor in the will of the taxpayers?
