Bieber rules award show

- JEN MCDONNELL

After LMFAO got the MuchMusic Video Awards off to a raunchy start, Justin Bieber gave his faithful fans something to shriek about as he claimed his first award of the evening.

Not that they needed an excuse. The 18-year-old pop star from Stratford, Ont., had them swooning from the moment he arrived on the red carpet with his baby brother in his arms. Soon after the show started, he climbed the stage to accept the award for international video of the year by a Canadian.

“Thank you so much,” said Bieber, clad in a black T-shirt with a gold chain dangling from his neck. “I want to say thank you so much to my home. I want to say thank you to all my family, my fans, I wouldn’t be here without you guys. You guys are amazing, I love you.”

Well, the feeling is obviously mutual. Bieber, who closed the annual awards bash, was clearly the evening’s main attraction. Fans clutched cardboard cutouts of his head, waved marriage proposals hastily scrawled on gigantic signs and wore purple and red head- bands with his name on them.

And like any good awards show, the real fun is in the who said and did what, rather than who went home with what award. Here, then is a roundup of the best and worst moments of the night:

Best multitasker Carly Rae Jepsen was clearly the night’s MVP. After performing Call Me Maybe at the beginning of the ceremony, she joined Flo Rida during Wild Ones, taking over Sia’s vocal duties. Moments later, she was onstage again, this time to accept the awards Video of the Year and the fan-voted UR Fave Video of the Year, and to introduce Kelly Clarkson. She seemed to spend more time on stage than MMVAs hosts LMFAO.

Worst 0utfit It looked like Katy Perry borrowed Britney Spears’ nude leotard from the Toxic video for her MMVA performance of Wide Awake. The risque outfit was overshadowed by her giant butterfly wings during the song, but she couldn’t hide behind those when she won the UR Fave International Artist or Group Award a few minute later. “I had no idea I was going to win an award after I performed or I would have put on more clothes,” the over-exposed singer said sheepishly.

Best entrance For their fifth trip to the MMVAs, Marianas Trench recently said that they’d been plotting an “EXTREMELY cool” appearance for months. After all, they’ve already fought ninjas, spoofed Gaga, arrived in a hot tub, and rolled onto the red carpet in a giant hamster ball. This year’s entrance lived up to their crazy high standards. The boys spilled out of a bouncy castle riding inflatable horses. Giddy-up!

Best announcement Lights revealed that she recently got married to Bless the fall frontman Beau Bokan. “It’s amazing, it really is. I’m very, very lucky and very blessed,” she said of married life. “But it was like, you get married and then it was like ‘See ya, I’m going to Australia.’ I just got back, so it’s a lot of hard times, but it’s good.”

Best sing-along Carly Rae Jepsen did a great job performing her massive hit Call Me Maybe, but if she wanted to slack off, the audience would have had her back. The singing crowd threatened to drown out her vocals, especially during the hook-filled chorus. Even rain couldn’t put a damper on the audience’s enthusiasm for the catchy tune, which tops the Billboard charts.

Best performance Nelly Furtado may have sung “bigger is better” during her performance, but it was Ed Sheeran’s stripped down, acoustic rendition of The A Team that won us over. With nothing more than a guitar, the UK singer delivered a heartfelt performance amid the din.

Worst trend The biggest (and weirdest) trend on the red carpet was to use children as arm candy. From Justin Bieber’s baby brother to Katy Perry’s gaggle of mini me’s, kids were the night’s hottest accessory. Perry walked the red carpet with eight little girls who were dressed up in costumes from her Teenage Dream music videos. Let’s hope the kid wearing cupcakes on her boobs isn’t going to need therapy because of this.
