Debate continues

Re: “Future tense,” Editorial, Oct. 2.

Tuesday’s editorial is absolutely wrong. Omar Khadr is back, but the debate must not end.

He was shot and captured in Afghanistan after a firefight. He shouldn’t have been there, but the evidence he killed a U.S. specialist is paper thin at best. He was illegally imprisoned in Guantanamo and pleaded guilty to charges in a kangaroo court to avoid years in a U.S. dungeon.

The U.S. suffered a terrible tragedy on 9/11, but its subsequent behaviour, taking out its revenge on anyone in sight, guilty or not (most especially in Iraq), has undoubtedly ravaged its reputation. If we wish to be true friends of America, we should not sit quietly by, and say nothing. They are better people than this behaviour would suggest. Guantanamo is a stain on their reputation. Many Americans agree, and wish to end it.
