Share the road
Re: “Olympian injured after motorist hits cycle,” Oct. 1.
I was very sad and scared to read about Robin Clegg being run off the road in Springbank and possibly deliberately injured by a vehicle.
I am a driver and a cyclist, and I am increasingly alarmed at the aggressive attitudes some drivers have to cyclists, especially on quiet secondary roads where there is no traffic congestion. While I know it is a two-way street and cyclists and drivers make mistakes on the road that irritate each other, I think it is imperative for drivers to remember they have a 2,000-pound-plus vehicle and that the cyclist has an 18-pound bicycle.
I have been in other places in North America with programs promoting “share the road” between cars and bikes and to increase respect and safety on the road, and I encourage Calgarians to adopt similar attitudes. Let’s all wish Clegg a full recovery.
