Leaving no one behind

-

Dear MEOW,

I am going on for a Christmas vacation and was wondering if it was OK to leave my cat alone while I was away? I will be away for one week

— Jack

Dear Jack,

Have you checked into pet sitters? If you do not know of any pet sitters or the cost of a pet sitter is too expensive, what about asking a friend or relative whom you trust to drop by on a daily basis.

While cats may be OK for one overnight absence provided they have enough food and water, it is best to have someone checking on them on a regular basis for a few reasons. Cats love routine and predictability and are less stressed if they are fed at their regular times. Cats may become ill very quickly, and having a cat sitter that knows your cats and comes once or twice a day, may save a life.

Cats also get lonely. Both cats and dogs miss their owners deeply.

Lastly, cats can be pretty finicky about cleanliness, so having someone to scoop out the litter box daily will help keep them very happy.

While there are also many reputable boarding kennels that accept cats, it is less stressful for your cat to be in its own environment, so it can feel safe and secure during your absence. Make sure you hire a pet sitter with direct cat care experience and get references.
