‘Step your game up’ by giving generously

- LES GRAMANTIK

Christmas has many different meanings in my life.

Growing up in the late 1950s-early ’60s in Transylvania, Romania, Christmas was different; it was the height of communism with very little celebration and few presents. My mom was a single mother working in a factory, making just enough to feed us, so presents at any time, including Christmas, were neither a priority nor a reality.

I was once asked what the most memorable Christmas present I ever received as a kid was. Well, I really only remember one. It was a turquoise, V-neck sweater. In the Sixties in Romania, “turquoise” was a leading trend. As much as I tried to find out the origin of that sweater, I still have no idea how and where she got it for me. However, I was a “cool” kid for years to come.

Moving on in life, I have discovered the family Christmas, and the joy of giving and receiving was not important — it was about the gesture.

Once I arrived in Canada, I embraced the richness of the country and was swept away by the Christmas spirit one can see everywhere this time of year. I enjoyed the family celebrations and focused on what I and my family needed without really understanding and recognizing the need of others less fortunate.

Through my work with Athletics Canada, I have the privilege to travel the world and see how others live, and realize the challenges many face compared with how lucky we are in Canada and in Calgary. At the same time I see we are not immune to the changes created by a growing city: homelessness, hunger, poverty, addiction and family violence are everyday occurrences here, too.

When I was asked to write a guest column for the Calgary Herald Christmas fund campaign, I was excited and scared at the same time. For me, English is the fourth language and, without formal education, writing is a challenge. But a life without challenges would be boring.

At this stage of my life, living alone, I am more aware of the needs of others than my own, and I am committed to help the agencies associated with the Calgary Herald Christmas Fund Campaign, and you should, too. I am asking you to discover the joy of giving and make your life fuller.

As a coach for 40 years, I can say to you, Calgary, “step your game up,” give generously, and I will be there with you.

Thank you.
