Murder suspects appear in court
Three suspects accused of first-degree murder in the death of Ryan Lane were represented by high-profile lawyers when they made their first appearances Thursday in provincial court.
Sheena Cuthill, 26, whose lawyer is Alain Hepner, was the only one who appeared in person before Judge William Cummings.
Cuthill, 26, of Crossfield, is the mother of Lane’s daughter and the wife of co-accused Timothy Mark Rempel, 27. He and his brother, Wilhelm Klassen (Will) Rempel, 38, of Airdrie, appeared by closedcircuit television from Calgary Remand Centre.
The Rempels are represented by lawyers Allan Fay and Jim Lutz.
All three suspects were arrested last weekend.
Lane was last seen Feb. 7, 2012, in the 5200 block of Country Hills Blvd. N.W.
Investigators believe he was lured to the address in north Calgary, kidnapped and killed within 24 hours.
The cause of the death has not been released.
The remains of 24-year-old Lane were eventually discovered in the 5,200-hectare field near the suspects’ former home, along with evidence believed to be connected to his killing.
Investigators believe the motive for the crime was a custody disagreement involving Lane’s daughter.
Wilhelm Rempel also faces a child-pornography charge.
Police and prosecutors are discussing whether they will lay additional charges related to the alleged kidnapping.
The three suspects will be back in court on Dec. 21.
