Driver charged in 3-vehicle collision
A 48-year-old woman has been charged with impaired driving offences in connection with a three-vehicle crash in Marlborough Park Saturday afternoon that sent a 33-year-old man to hospital with critical injuries.
The man has been stabilized but remains in serious condition.
Meanwhile, police are still urging witnesses to come forward to help determine who had the right of way and to provide any information that would help with the investigation, said duty inspector Paul Stacey.
“It’s a major, major intersection and a busy time of day. More people saw it, but they just haven’t come forward yet,” he said.
Officers were called to 52nd Street and Madigan Drive N.E. shortly before 2 p.m. in response to a serious crash.
Police said a 2002 Ford Explorer was heading north on 52nd Street toward the intersection of Madigan Drive and Marbank Drive.
It appears the Explorer failed to stop for a red light and T-boned a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta that was leaving the westbound lanes on Madigan Drive and heading onto southbound 52nd Street, police said.
The Explorer ended up striking a 1998 Nissan Altima heading east on Marbank Drive toward Madigan Drive across 52nd Street.
Firefighters had to use the hydraulic cutters to rescue the man pinned inside the Jetta.
He was taken to the Foothills Hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the Ford Explorer was also taken to the Foothills Hospital.
Police have charged Pamela Polkinghorne, 48, of Calgary, with impaired driving, impaired driving causing bodily harm and refusing to take a bloodalcohol test.
The 46-year-old male driver of the Altima provided a breath test at the scene. Police said he was found to have a blood-alcohol level over 0.05 and had his licence suspended for three days.
He was also charged with having no insurance and no registration.
