Thieves target Coral Springs home

Calgary police are investigating after five armed men broke into and ransacked a northeast home, assaulted an occupant and fled with property Sunday night.

Officers were called to a two-storey home on Coral Springs Boulevard N.E. just before midnight with reports of a home invasion.

Five men with weapons entered the home, beat up and tied up one of the occupants, then ran off with property belonging to the victim, said duty inspector Paul Stacey.

He said it appears to be a targeted attack.

“I don’t know if they knew him but it sounds like there was a reason they chose him,” he added.

The victim was taken to hospital in non-life-threatening condition with injuries to his head and foot.

Police said four of the suspects are black men and the fifth is a Hispanic man. They are of varying builds. Three were wearing scarves.

It’s not known what the offenders took.

There were at least one or two other people in the home at the time, but no one else was injured.

Neighbours were shocked to hear about the incident, describing the Coral Springs community as safe.

“It’s surprising. This street isn’t known for anything like that,” said resident Jag Kalsi, who has lived in the area for 14 years.

Al, who didn’t want to give his last name, said he was surprised culprits would choose to break into a home on such a busy street and so close to the community centre.

He said police knocked on his door shortly after midnight to check if he’d seen or heard anything.

“I don’t know anything about it,” he said, adding the man who lives in the targeted home is friendly and always says hello.

Robbery unit detectives are investigating.
