Court wisdom
I am not surprised that many people have called for more gun control in the wake of the tragic Newtown massacre. However, Rick Patterson argues that the gun lobby is misreading the Constitution by separating the right to bear arms from membership in a militia.
In fact, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in 2008 that the Constitution does protect the individual’s right to own firearms unconnected to service in a militia. Patterson may think the court made a mistake, but his opinion has been formally rejected by the highest court in the land.
Those who respect the individual’s right to defend himself are in perfect alignment with the Constitution.
