Looking for the perfect fit

-

Dear MEOW,

I am going to adopt a cat, and am excitedly preparing my shopping list of supplies. Do you have any advice on the type or size of carrier to purchase?

— McKenzie

Dear McKenzie,

A carrier will be one of the most important purchases you make.

For safety, cats should always be transported in a carrier, never left to roam loose in a vehicle, or carried in your arms into a vet appointment.

There are a variety of sizes and types of carriers available for purchase.

Some carriers resemble mesh gym bags with a shoulder carry strap. Others are of the usual hard-sided plastic variety with hinged doors.

The gym-bag types are often handy for airline travel, where on-board pets must fit under the seat.

We recommend hardsided carriers, however, due to their durability.

They can also be secured by seatbelts for vehicle travel.

The most common error new cat owners make is to purchase a cute and tiny carrier, which seems just the perfect fit when you adopt a kitten.

Soon, however, that cute, little kitten will double, triple or quadruple in size.

An adult cat should be able to stand up and turn around in the carrier.

Spencer is just the right balance between lap cat and playful housemate. His rescuer took wonderful care of him until the Meow Foundation had an opening at its adoption centre.

He is a perfect family cat. Ask about Spencer today!
