Gravity brings visitors down to earth
Who doesn’t love walking into a place where everybody knows your name?
It’s this friendly welcome that brings people back to Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar in the new Inglewood Art Block.
In the year it has been open, the space has turned into the neighbourhood hub owner Andy Fennell envisioned. Having come to Canada from Birmingham in 2001, he left the corporate world to do his own thing — create a space that drew people together, allowing them to relax, reconnect and build a sense of community.
Fennell opened shop last March, just three months before his wife, Zara, was due to have their first baby. With the help of a friend, Fennell built solid tables out of reclaimed wood from a fence in Balzac, and a bar using wood from a church in Wales. Zara, meanwhile, perfected the menu, including a delectable carrot cake and dense, flourless chocolate cake.
Their hard work has paid off; Gravity is always humming with activity.
A new breed of cafe that serves coffee in the morning and wine in the evening, the space draws an interesting mix of people. In the evenings, friends and couples visit over wine and cheese boards (three for $20 or five for $25) and warm citrus-marinated olives ($7). Earlier in the day, there are almost always kids.
Besides serving up a perfect Phil & Sebastian coffee, Gravity offers an interesting beer and wine list and great food — from breakfast and lunch to casual dinner options and snacks in-between.
