Oath taken

- Thomas C. Greenwood, Calgary

Re: “Drop the oath,” Letter, July 16.

I find it hard to believe Bruce Comstock once worked with a senior member of the British Armed Forces who had never taken an oath of allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II. The individual he worked with advised that no other forces members had taken the oath, that he was aware of.

Well, here is the one exBritish serviceman he was unaware of. I enlisted in the Royal Marines on Aug. 25, 1964, and served for nine years. I still have my copy of attestation in which the oath of allegiance to the Queen, her heirs and successors that I swore to is clearly laid out and signed by me, as well as the certificate of the attesting officer.

The same oath was taken by the 60-odd other lads whom I enlisted with on that day. I somehow doubt we were the only ones who have taken the oath of allegiance.
