How many of you have been contemplating installing central air conditioning in your home? The typical response to such a question is usually “I don’t need air conditioning in Calgary, it’s only hot for two weeks.” Air conditioning season in Calgary is relatively short, rated at approximately 31 days. However, you still may want to consider air conditioning in your home for many important reasons. Air conditioning is the system that is used to cool surroundings and inhouse atmosphere in less time. Air conditioning systems are extensively used in offices and have become more prevalent in residential homes because air conditioning can provide many benefits in terms of comfort and relaxation to home owners. Residential air conditioning allows you to enjoy your perfect indoor temperature in any room within your home. You no longer need to sleep in the basement during those hot summer nights when your bedroom feels like a sauna. Bedrooms can be kept cool and comfortable throughout the warmest of summer nights, allowing a constant level of comfort throughout the year. When you spend your day working and you are stressed out, coming home to a more pleasant environment can help calm you down and feel more relaxed. Your home should be your oasis, a place to escape to when you want to keep the world out. Another advantage to having central air conditioning in your home is improved air quality and humidity levels. The use of air conditioning allows home owners to effectively purify the air and reduce dust, pet fur and pollen. Those who suffer from allergies and respiratory problems will particularly benefit, especially if you spend quite a bit of time in the home. Many people today now even work from home and spend the majority of their day indoors. Why wouldn’t you want your home to be the perfect work environment, you would expect that from your employer right? The ability to keep windows and doors closed in the summer also improves the security of your home, especially at night. With air conditioning installed those sleeping in bedrooms at ground level can enjoy a safe and secure night sleep! Being able to keep doors and windows close will also allow you to keep out the noise of traffic, or loud neighbors. You no longer have to listen to the party going on next door while you are trying to get a good night sleep. Keeping windows closed will also help anyone suffering of allergies as the transfers of allergens and bacteria from outside into your home will be minimized. Today’s new homes have also changed architecturally speaking. Many new homes are now designed with 2 storey great room with floor to ceiling windows which face south. The sun exposure to those rooms lasts all day long with little reprieve, pulling the blinds won’t help and the rooms never get shade. Just as you would consider heat loss from these windows you should also calculate heat gain. Air conditioning will allow you to reduce the amount of heat coming in from the windows just as central heating would be designed to reduce that amount of heat loss in the winter. I know I may not have been able to convince some of you as to why you should consider installing AC in your home but let me ask you this: Would you invest $3000-$4500 on air conditioning or $30,000 + on a basement development just so you could have a comfortable place to sleep in the summer? Just some food for thought, you decide which is the better choice.
