Diverse attractions put Montgomery on the map

-

Montgomery in northwest Calgary is open for business, and welcomes Calgarians to come on by.

With 115 unique places to shop, dine and do business, Montgomery in northwest Calgary offers a diversity of destinations for all Calgarians to enjoy.

“It’s got amazing great spirit,” says Pamela Tchida Kupidy, executive director of the Montgomery Business Revitalization Zone. “We’ve got variety and great business owners. We are unique, cool and hip with a small town feel. We are really proud of our community.”

During the flood, Montgomery was under the city’s mandatory evacuation order and power was off for several days in a large part of the neighborhood.

While businesses in Montgomery were not flooded, “all the businesses were affected in some way,” Kupidy says.

Some businesses were closed for a few days; all have since reopened.

“Montgomery is very much rich with small businesses, so it’s critical that people come back and support them,” says Michael Noble, chef and proprietor of NOtaBLE—The Restaurant on Bowness Road. “Everybody was affected and it’s critical for the small businesses to be supported in order to survive.”

Montgomery has three commercial business corridors: 16th Avenue, Bowness Road and Home Road. Celebrating 50 years as a community, after being annexed into the City of Calgary,

“I believe it’s really a community that’s on the rise because of the location and history. It’s becoming the new cool,” Noble says.“There’s a lot of revitalization happening within the business zone. It’s a great community for people to wander through. We’re close to the river, and the Foothills Hospital is up the hill. There really is a great vibe in the community, which is fueled by a group of business owners who take action and make things happen.”

And such was the case during last month’s flood, when businesses and residents stepped forward to support their fellow Calgarians during the flood recovery process. This support points to the character of the community, says Iqbal (Bob) Haider, owner of A-Plus Insurance Services.

“The friendliness of Montgomery stands out,” he says.

Aside from NOtaBLE, there are many other diverse businesses, such as Self Connection Books, Atomic Dog, Thairapy, Vagus Fitness and Pazzer’s Pub. In addition to retail shops, the area is also home to a myriad of professional services.

In partnership with the Montgomery Community Association, the Montgomery BRZ recently beautified a cityowned park, now known as Montgomery Town Square, at the corner of Bowness Road and Home Road. A 1,588-kilogram artisan-built wrought iron M is the park’s new focal point, unveiled at the Full Monty Mini-Fest in June.

“M stands for Montgomery and also meeting place,” says Kupidy. “We’re hoping the community will use the park and its benches as a place to meet and generate community spirit.”

The Montgomery BRZ Full Monty business and destination guide is available at participating businesses.
