Johnson’s following features a Gretzky

Seven-time PGA winner in Canada, but no Paulina

- SEAN FITZ-GERALD

OAKVILLE, ONT. — Dustin Johnson has been photographed in many locations away from a course this year. The professional golfer has had his picture taken while reclining in the sun, frolicking in the surf, embracing his girlfriend and, last month, snapping a photo of his girlfriend while she had a monkey on her shoulder.

The 29-year-old, a seven-time winner on the PGA Tour, has been fodder for paparazzi for the better part of a year, since he was first spotted with Paulina Gretzky, daughter of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky.

“It’s not weird to me,” Johnson said of the extra media attention. “I enjoy it. You’ve just got to be careful about what you’re doing. There’s always somebody taking a picture.”

Is he used to the photographers?

“They’re not too bad,” he said. “But, no, I mean, I’m not used to worrying about people taking pictures of me.”

On Thursday, Johnson was within driving distance of Wayne Gretzky’s childhood home, in Brantford, Ont., as he played in the first round of the RBC Canadian Open. He did not do well, shooting a 3-over 75 to finish near the bottom of the field.

Paulina Gretzky, who recently appeared in Grown Ups 2, was not spotted at Glen Abbey Golf Club, and Johnson did not volunteer any detail about their relationship. Is he a hockey fan? “I’ve always kind of liked hockey,” Johnson said. “I like going to the games more than watching it on TV. It’s kind of like baseball. It’s a lot more fun to go to a game than it is to watch it.”

He has spent time on the course with the elder Gretzky: “We play a lot of golf together, actually.”

Is The Great One very good at golf?

“He’s a fairly decent golfer,” Johnson said. “But yeah, I give him strokes.”
