Police have confirmed one man is dead and two others injured in a shooting Thursday night off 17th Avenue S.W.

Police said the shooter fled the scene.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots at about 8:40 p.m. near Western Canada High School.

One witness said he heard five to six shots.

Police were called to the scene in the 1900 block of 5A Street S.W.

When officers arrived, they found three victims.

Det. Alex Stokes confirmed that one of them had died.

The two others, a man and a woman, were suffering wounds as a result of the shooting and were taken to hospital.

Stokes was unable to provide an update on their condition.

Police said the offender fled the scene and the suspect was still at large at press time.

Henry Emond, 76, who lives nearby, heard the shots.

“It was gunfire,” he said. “It was rapid shots — bang, bang, bang.”

Then he heard a woman scream.

“I saw all the police cars,” he said. “I knew it was real.”

Another nearby resident, Cody Stuart, said he heard the gunfire and then saw one of the victims on the ground on the street corner.

The homicide unit has taken over the case.

So far, the gang unit has not been called in.

Several roads around the scene were closed for several hours during the investigation.
