Chestermere woman charged in fatal crash
A Chestermere woman has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run collision in east Calgary early Wednesday that killed a 26-year-old man.
Police and paramedics were called to the 3100 block of 17th Avenue S.E. at about 2:30 a.m. on reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
The man was found dead at the scene. The SUV had left before police arrived, but witnesses called 911.
The SUV was later discovered abandoned a few blocks away with the driver nowhere to be found.
The vehicle was registered to an address in Chestermere. With the help of the RCMP, a woman returning to the home was arrested around 4:30 a.m.
Police say alcohol is suspected in the crash.
Julia Marie McMillan, 40, of Chestermere, is charged with hit-and-run causing death.
Charges are also pending in a separate crash that killed a pedestrian in Douglasdale on Wednesday morning. A man in his 20s was crossing in a marked crosswalk at Douglasdale Boulevard and Douglas Woods Way S.E. at about 6:45 a.m.
A vehicle had stopped to allow the man to cross, but a second vehicle pulled out from behind the stopped vehicle and struck the man, police said. The man was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but later died.
The driver of the offending vehicle stayed at the scene to be interviewed by investigators. Police say driver inattention may have played a role in the collision.
Meanwhile, Calgary police continue to investigate a hit-and-run crash early Thursday that sent a pedestrian to hospital.
The man in his mid-20s was crossing the street at Richmond Road and 40th Street S.W. before 2 a.m. when he was hit by a pickup truck, which drove away from the scene.
The pedestrian was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.
