Doomed to be damaged
Re: “Mulcair’s pipe dream,” Editorial, Dec. 26.
I agree with Thomas Mulcair about the Northern Gateway pipeline. As for the federal Tories, it amazes me that anyone could still believe these are impartial people when it comes to protecting the environment. This is the same group that dismantled regulations, cut funding and effectively gagged Canadian scientists from even talking to the public. It is also the same government which has spent $40 million of taxpayer money promoting the oil industry and even called those opposed to the pipeline antiCanadian.
For further proof of their lack of concern for the environment, consider the recent approval of the Jackpine expansion. Despite a review panel finding that the project would result in severe and irreversible damage to the environment, it has been given approval and seemingly fasttracked.
I suggest all those in favour of the pipeline to Kitimat travel there, experience where thousands of oil tanker trips will be sailing and talk to the people who face the disaster which will occur when a tanker sinks. Or go to Google Earth.
This is a pristine area which has narrow channels, abundant wildlife and is prone to severe storms and earthquakes. It needs protection. I am sure there are other alternatives and I certainly do not believe the rhetoric coming out of Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver.
