More grocery gift cards handed out after ice storm

The Ontario government says more grocery store gift cards will be distributed in Toronto this week to people who lost food in the aftermath of this month’s crippling ice storm.

The province says more than $160,000 in gift cards were handed out Tuesday.

But a lot of people who lined up at Ontario Works offices for the aid still left empty-handed.

Due to the high demand, the province says more cards will be made available on Thursday and Friday, again stressing the assistance is intended for those who lost food and can’t afford to replace it.

Despite the round-the-clock effort of hydro crews, about 1,100 people in Ontario, including some 160 in Toronto, rang in the new year without electricity.

It’s now been 12 days since the storm turned off their lights and heat.

About 650 customers in New Brunswick and fewer than 100 in Quebec are also still waiting to be reconnected as temperatures plunge across the region.
