Patience required

- Howard Lee, Calgary

Re: “Save cycling for a better day,” Editorial, Dec. 27.

I am thankful that Calgary’s motorists in general exhibit more patience in sharing roadways and in observing the law on the rights of bicycles than was evident in your editorial. You did not give a balanced opinion.

You did not distinguish onstreet bike lanes from off-street bikeways. Are you aware that clearing off-street bikeways requires different equipment and training from street clearing? They do not share resources and do not lead to priority conflict.

Does the editorial board recognize clearing on-street bike lanes and streets separately at different times for the same street introduces inefficiency and costs?

Giving priority to clearing bikeways shows the world that Calgary, in supporting those willing and able to commute year-round in a non-motorized mode, is sincerely committed to all forms of conservation.
